Always Knew

high above the sea
hey everybody hey look at me
up in the air like a regular bandit
can’t hardly stand it
I feel so free

Daddy said to me
“You’re going too high son
you’re flying foolishly
this won’t end well
I’m being serious
I mean it Icarus
better listen to me.”

Soon molten wax and feathers everywhere
the waves rise up as I fall through the air

I knew that it would always be this way
I knew that it would always be this way
I know I only have  myself to blame
I knew that it would always be this way

Down on bended knee
flowers and chocolate from me to thee
Helen of Troy I’m your Menelaus
gallant and chivalrous
loving faithfully

still I can’t help but see
the way your eye wanders
gazing longingly
a bit obsessed with that tattooed Paris
so raw he embarrasses
staring lustily

I gave you Troy but I guess you needed more
you leave with him while I watch from the shore

I knew that it would always be this way
I knew that it would always be this way
I know I only have  myself to blame
I knew that it would always be this way

No matter where you go
no matter who you see
no matter what you do you
will never escape from me

I am part of you
I am here with you
I am here

Now my hair’s gone gray
most of what’s left of it anyway
my life’s work has been discarded disregarded
just tossed away

All I ever tried to do
is be who I am in spite of you
I set my course I made my choices
ignored the voices
to my own self was true

The price of independence can be steep
right now I need to find a place to sleep

I knew that it would always be this way
I knew that it would always be this way
I know I only have  myself to blame
I knew that it would always be this way

Naked In The Garden

he took out his mirror
he spun it in a net
he cast it over me
he cursed me to forget
about the basic goodness
the dawning of the light
he tossed me out
to wander through the night

I came upon a garden
I took off all my clothes
I danced among the blossoms
of the lily and the rose
I heard my Lord approaching
walking in moonlight
I trembled while
I hid from his sight

back in the saddle
riding the wind
visions are going
now they’re coming back again

the dream is empty
the myth untrue
every path I take keeps
coming back to you

I seized the mirror
I held it to his face
he crumbled to a pile of dust
he blew off into space
I gazed into the mirror
my vision pure and true
I saw nothing else
left for me to do

now I’m nowhere
out of time and out of place
birds in the sky fly on by
leaving not a trace
memories linger
before they pass on through
with this breath
now dawns anew

Heartless

don’t it seem kind of heartless
how little you can do
watching someone suffer
from what they’re going through

they come to you hurting
they look at you and say
what kind of monster
would let me be this way

no other way around it
no way out but through
makes it worse if you help them
do what they alone must do

hard to know the difference
between caring and neglect
dignity and choices
consequence respect

giant wheel keeps on turning
coming round without a doubt
will they ever stop the spinning
will they ever work it out

don’t it seem kind of heartless
how little you can do
watching someone suffer
from what they’re going through

I Think Too Much

I think too much
I’m always in my head
I’m always going over
exactly what I should have said
I think too much
it really wears me out
doesn’t make a difference what I’m
babbling about

I feel too much
I’m always getting hurt
I keep my list of grudges
neatly tucked inside my shirt
I feel too much
I’m hard on my friends
I’m always adding to my list of
those who owe amends

I talk too much
I always run my mouth
I’m the biggest talker in the
east west north and south
I talk too much
I swear it never quits
I’m stuck inside a monologue
of all my greatest hits

I judge too much
I’m always placing blame
I’m looking down on others
while I’m doing just the same
I judge too much
I’m always keeping score
no matter how much others give
I’m always needing more

I’m never here
I’m always checking out
you can find me somewhere else
just wandering about
I’m never here
it’s something of a mess
distraction is the state in which
I keep my home address

I’m not enough
I always come up short
my accountant needs more profit
in my quarterly report
I’m not enough
I’m always in the red
it doesn’t make much sense for me to
get up out of bed

I’m always wrong
I never get it right
every time I look another
issue comes to light
I’m always wrong
it’s never gonna end
I’ve got so many defects more
than I can comprehend

I think too much

Butterfly

Butterfly moves from flower to flower
might stay for years or rest an hour
when it’s time to go she won’t stay
watch that butterfly fly away

Flowers get jealous flowers get mad
they try to hold on to what they had
no matter what they do or say
watch that butterfly fly away

Butterfly and flower embrace
flower studies butterfly’s face
searching for a sign looking for a clue
who’s the next flower she will do

Don’t blame the sun for shining bright
don’t blame the snake when it does bite
sure as minutes turn into hours
butterfly moves from flower to flower
butterfly moves from flower to flower

Mind Like A Mirror

mind like a mirror
wide as the sea
no matter where I look
all I see is me
not a thing to do
no place to be
mind like a mirror
wide as the sea

mind gently open
mind like the sky
every hope and fear
clouds that float on by
no cause for concern
nothing to try
mind gently open
mind like the sky

open and simple
utterly free
uncomplicated
effortlessly
original presence
merging with me
open and simple
utterly free

mind gently open
mind like the sky
mind like a mirror
wide as the sea

Empty Room

there’s an empty room down the hall
hardly used these days at all
hasn’t always been this way
she used to come she used to stay
empty room

I used to slip into her room at night
her face lit by the hallway light
listening to her breathing deep
next to her I’d fall asleep
empty room

memories and dreams
blurring between false and true
shadows and shapes
morning will bring something new

just a shell of used to be
missing the love that once lived in
this empty room

weeks and months and years go by
I’ll never stop I’ve got to try
though I don’t know just where I’ll be
she’ll always have a place with me
empty room

I See Him Here Today

when I push my cart
to the side
so other folks may pass

when I check out heavy items first
fragile items last

when I look the clerk in the eye
and wish them a nice day

I remember things my dad would do and say

though he’s been gone a long time
I see him here today

when a baby catches sight of me
and gives a happy smile

when I somehow put another first
just for a little while

when the right thing is hard to do
but I do it anyway

I remember things my dad would do and say

though he’s been gone a long time
I see him here today

I see him when I hide my light away
when I cannot run
but try to anyway

I see him in the people that I choose
when their hearts turn cruel
with words that leave a bruise

I see him when I take on the blame
when things go wrong
and I’m covered up with shame

I see him every time I take a fall
when I try and fail
and lie there feeling small

the moment when my child was born
she howled wild in the night

rudely pushed into the world
angry at the light

gazing at her tiny face
I saw my father’s eyes

my wounded heart cracked open wide
as my baby cried

now I know my father
was a complicated man

I guess he did the best he could
with what he had on hand

though he made mistakes I know
that I can truly say

I hope that I am half the man
the way I live today

I think of him when times are good
also when they’re hard

his love that helped make me strong
his love that left me scarred

most of all I think about
a debt I can’t repay

I remember things my dad would do and say

though he’s been gone a long time
I see him here today

Pray For You

the doors you have to open
tears you have to cry
a burden best unspoken
a bind you must untie

raging of the river
pulling of the tide
the taking from the giver
til nothing’s left inside

destiny
road ahead getting narrow
a painful guarantee
wish I could take your slings and arrows
your heavy load lay on me

I don’t know
who I pray to
but every night
I pray for you

travelers
just passing through
every night I pray for you
every night I pray for you

razor left its scripture
written on your thigh
Medea’s poisoned kisses
no choice but to comply

guiltless but convicted
in prison you were born
injury inflicted
by the rose by the thorn

mystery
how a pure love got so twisted
distorted and confused
innocent yet still enlisted
exploited and abused

I don’t know
who I pray to
but every night
I pray for you

travelers
just passing through
every night I pray for you
every night I pray for you

In a dream
shadow figures bound by tether
dance to music no one chose
out of time they sway together
between union and repose

What The World Needs Now Is Love

What the world needs now is love sweet love
It’s the only thing that there’s just too little of
What the world needs now is love sweet love
No not just for some but for everyone

Lord we don’t need another mountain
There are mountains and hillsides enough to climb
There are oceans and rivers enough to cross
Enough to last ’til the end of time

What the world needs now is love sweet love
It’s the only thing that there’s just too little of
What the world needs now is love sweet love
No not just for some but for everyone

Lord, we don’t need another meadow
There are corn fields and wheat fields enough to grow
There are sunbeams and moonbeams enough to shine
Oh listen Lord, if you want to know

What the world needs now is love sweet love
It’s the only thing that there’s just too little of
What the world needs now is love sweet love
No not just for some but for everyone
